L’œuvre tragique de Sénèque au xviiie siècle : lectures, relectures et controverses

Nous proposons d’aborder la question de l’émergence du modèle et son éclipse sous l’angle l’histoire éditoriale des tragédies. nous appuierons sur les théoriciens xviie siècle un rapide panorama éditions tragédies parues xve au xixe pour asseoir notre propos. Puis concentrerons deux qui sont d’importants jalons historiques dans le mouvement d’ensemble : celle l’abbé Brumoy (1730) M. L. Coupé (1795), en essayant dégager traits caractéristiques lecture premier par second. Alors que véhicule une image censeur assez sévère, on se rend compte qu’il est nuancé jugement, reconnaît défauts mais aussi qualités Sénèque, dont il a bien lu compris dramaturgie. Or semble certains, Coupé, n’ont retenu part négative Brumoy. Si été mal lu, n’avoir pas ou écouté tout, faudra attendre xxe, voire xxie qu’on revienne non à ses arguments point vue, bienveillant, seul tragique latin soit parvenu entier, ce titre demeure, sinon modèle, moins exception exemplaire.
